SHANGHAI police were searching last night for three suspects who, witnesses said, robbed a jewelry store at gunpoint in a supermarket in Minhang District. No injuries or deaths were reported during the robbery.

"I was almost scared to death," Zhao Li, a witness who was shopping in the market and said he was only a meter away from the incident, told Shanghai Daily last night.

Zhao said he saw three people, all wearing masks, come to the store on the first floor of the E-Mart about 8:30pm yesterday.

"Each of them carried a gun and knife," Zhao said - although he could not tell if the guns were real or toys.

"Suddenly they used the butt of the guns and smashed the counter glass," said Zhao. "They took away jewelry like golden necklaces."

Zhao said the robbers even threw explosive-like devices to make smoke.

The whole robbery lasted about five minutes, Zhao said.

Zhao, together with dozens of others in the market, soon fled out.

"They did not point guns at us," he said. "Here's total chaos then."

He said police arrived about 10 minutes later and the supermarket and the nearby complex were cordoned off.

"At first I even thought they were shooting a police-and-bandit film," said Zhao.

The robbery was the second of its kind in recent years. Four men armed robbed a Liaomiao gold and jewelry store, a famous local jewelry brand, in March 2006 in suburban Jiading District.

They stole goods worth nearly 1 million yuan (US$147,150). The men were caught four days later. The leader was sentenced to death.

A GANG who threatened motorcyclists with violence and stole their vehicles, even throwing one victim from a bridge, has been caught, police said yesterday.

The gang stole three motorcycles and cash last month, police said. The value of the vehicles was estimated at about 10,000 yuan (US$1,472).

A recent case involved a man, surnamed Zheng, who used his motor tricycle as an illegal cab. Three of the gang, pretending to be passengers, stole his tricycle, beat him up and threw him off a bridge, police said.

The robbery happened about 11pm on August 27, police said, when the suspects hailed Zheng's tricycle in the Baihe area of Qingpu District.

Police said the suspects picked a route where the streets were dark and remote.

Near the intersection of Anzhi Road and Xitang Road, Zheng was attacked.

Zheng fell on to a garbage dump beneath the bridge and escaped with bruises.

Police said they found a man surnamed Li, who purchased motorcycles, and soon caught the rest of the gang. Chen Zechun, Shi Wujian, Duan Dinghua and Yao Xunmao, stole motorcycles and sold them to Li.

TWO middle school students injured each other with a knife in a fight in the playground of a suburban school yesterday, police said, the second such incident at a school in the past two days.

The boys, one injured in the chest and the other in the arm, were taken to hospital where they were in a stable condition last night, police said.

"The cause of the fight is unclear and still under investigation," said police officer Chen Cheng.

The incident happened about 5:30pm yesterday at the Qiliang Middle School at 62 Qiliang Road of Jiading District, police said.

"No one knows what had happened but the two had set the time and place to fight on the playground," Chen said.

Chen said that during the fight the older student, a 16-year-old surnamed Tang, took out a knife and cut the other boy, a 14-year-old who has not been named, on the chest but the two later struggled for the knife and Tang was also cut in the arm.

"Tang carried the knife to school from home," Chen said. Tang is in the ninth grade and the other student is in the eighth, police said.

It was the second incidence of school violence in the past two days. On Tuesday, a 14-year-old boy was stabbed to death in a fight with a schoolmate in a middle school in the Pudong New Area.

The suspect, in the same grade as the victim, is said to have stabbed the victim twice in the back, causing massive loss of blood.

What caused the fight has not been revealed but classmates said it may have been triggered by a quarrel on the Internet the previous evening.

A 14-YEAR-OLD boy was stabbed to death in a fight with a schoolmate in Shanghai yesterday, police said.

A suspect, surnamed Feng, has been detained for police interrogation.

Witnesses said the fight happened less than 200 meters from the school at about 7.30am while most of the students were on their way to begin classes.

The two boys were in the same eighth grade but in different classes and the cause of the fight was still under investigation.

The victim, surnamed Ling, was stabbed in the back and pronounced dead on arrival at the No. 7 People's Hospital of Shanghai. He had suffered a severe loss of blood, the hospital said.

"Ling was running but soon collapsed on the ground," said a witness, surnamed Li. "His blood was all over his back."

The incident happened on Laiyang Road in the Pudong New Area and bloodstains could still be seen on the road yesterday afternoon. The boys were pupils at the Gaoqiao Experimental Middle School Affiliated to Shanghai Normal University.

Police said that an argument had escalated into a chase and a fight during which Feng took out a knife. After Ling was stabbed, he collapsed in front of a Lawson's convenience store.

Ling's shirt was soaked in the blood flowing from the wound, witnesses said.

"He was without a heartbeat or pulse when he arrived at the emergency room," said Li Guilan, a chief nurse at the No. 7 People's Hospital.

Witnesses said Feng did not leave the scene but threw the knife on the ground and waited for the police to arrive.

School officials yesterday declined to comment on the incident.

FIVE-YEAR-OLD Zhang Zhao is excited about today - not only will he undergo the first of a series of free surgeries to help repair his looks after his face was seriously burnt in a fire but he may also get to see his mother.

The Shanghai Charity Foundation said that Zhang's mother, who abandoned him after the terrible fire, would show up today before the surgery to support her son.

"We all hope that the mother can be back home because Zhang and his family really need her," said Li Chen, an official with the foundation.

Doctors have finished the pre-operation examination, having invited psychologists for mental consultation over Zhang. They said the boy was in relatively stable mood.

Today's operation will mend the tissues around his eyes and mouth, to solve the problem of visual development and eating difficulty. The second phase, to be carried out in four to six months, will mainly involve the plastic surgery part, doctors said.

Born in suburban Jinshan District, the boy's farmer family have endured tough economic conditions. After the tragic home fire last year, which caused injuries to Zhang and his grandfather, their condition worsened further. It was during this time that the mother walked out on the family.

The family's misfortune has touched a chord in the city. Until yesterday, the foundation had collected more than 75,000 yuan (US$11,042) for the boy through donations.

Because of his facial injuries, Zhang was nicknamed "Little Monster." But last week he finally gained admission to a kindergarten.

A 10-YEAR-OLD boy died from electric shock on Monday night after touching a lamppost while playing in the garden of his community in Zhabei District.

It was later found that the lamppost was leaking and power to it was cut off yesterday. Investigation into the cause of the electricity leak was still ongoing yesterday.

The grief-stricken parents of the victim, Li Yuhao, are planning a lawsuit against the property management company of the Dahua Yangcheng residential area, according to the investigation report.

The accident happened about 7pm on Monday, neighbors said. Li touched the metal lamppost at the east side of the garden and suddenly collapsed, screaming in pain, neighbors said.

"I thought he was suffering a heatstroke until I, too, felt the shock while trying to revive him," said a middle-aged woman witness, who lives in the area.

Li was rushed to hospital but did not make it alive.

Li's parents, from Hunan Province, said Li was a good boy and had good grades in school. He had just celebrated his 10th birthday some days ago, they revealed.

The lamppost was installed in the area this summer.

POLICE have busted a gang in suburban Qingpu District which allegedly entrapped teenagers into gambling and then forced them into debt.

The police said they have so far confirmed nine cases in which the victims were cheated of about 350,000 yuan (US$51,528) in total.

The gang leader, Zhou Huabo, has been detained, along with 16 others.

Lu Haiquan, an officer who investigated the scams, said the gang first lured the teenagers, usually those with bad academic records, to join underground gambling, set up by Zhou, police said.

The gang members would then lend money to the students, who would fall into their trap and lose all the money. They were then forced to write IOUs to Zhou.

The gang would even threaten the students' families if they failed to pay up. Most of the parents would comply, just to get rid of the gang.

A FIRE at an apartment of an old residential neighborhood in downtown Huangpu District on Sunday highlighted the problem faced by both residents and the city's fire brigade for many years now: the narrow alley leading to the apartment prevented fire engines from reaching the spot.

They had to stop outside the neighborhood and firefighters used pipes measuring more than 400 meters to get access to water and use it to spray on the smoldering structure.

Fortunately, there were no casualties in Sunday's accident though concerns remain over such buildings and their firefighting equipment.

To ensure security for residents, the Shanghai Fire Control Bureau has arranged for more fire stations around such buildings, mainly concentrated in Huangpu, Luwan, Jing'an and Hongkou districts, so that prompt action can be taken and that the speedy response would make up for the time the firefighters may need to get water to the burning site.

Zhou Meiliang, an official with the bureau, told Shanghai Daily yesterday that firefighters can reach any fire scene within these areas in five minutes, while in other areas and districts the distance between a fire station and any accident site would exceed a five-minute's drive.

The districts concerned are putting up sprinklers along the hallways of old buildings. Such equipment, which is rarely seen in ordinary residential buildings, starts spraying water once a fire is spotted and before it spreads to more public areas.

"They are effective in the early stages of the fire," Zhou said, though he admitted they would not be that helpful in case of big blazes.

Zhou said the four districts have been investing several million yuan each year, sometimes up to 10 million yuan (US$1.47 million), to improve fire control facilities at dilapidated houses. They use fire-proof materials when transforming the old buildings' kitchens. Aging wires are also being replaced to prevent accidents.

Besides, some fire stations near old housing areas have been equipped with firefighting motorcycles, which enable firemen to get into such areas more easily with fire extinguishing tools, according to Zhou.

THREE people have been arrested for allegedly ripping goods from delivery men's bikes, police said yesterday.

Police said the suspects, all in their 20s, usually followed delivery men and stole the goods on their bikes while they were delivering their goods in nearby buildings.

The gang of three had committed more than 10 robberies since May involving goods worth 50,000 yuan (US$7,367). The suspects then pretended to be delivery men and sold the spoils at the recipients' address.

On July 8, a delivery man surnamed Lin had seven parcels on his electric bike containing cordyceps sinensis, a valuable herb of Chinese medicine; 15 cell phones; and some T-shirts stolen while he was delivering in a residential area on Guokang Road. A similar incident took place on July 24 in a residential area on Zhoujiazui Road.

On checking the surveillance camera, police found that one of the three suspects later came back to Zhoujiazui Road and made a cash-on-delivery to the address.

The suspects were caught on August 12 in an Internet cafe in Hongkou District, police said.
